Women’s Health Physiotherapy

We provide women’s health physiotherapy (women’s health physical therapy) services including treatment of pelvic issues and perinatal care.

Detailed assessment allows for planning of treatment specific to your needs.

When appropriate, the first assessment includes an examination of the pelvic floor muscles.

Once a good understanding of your needs are established, the individualised, one-on-one therapy can commence.

We strive to adhere to evidence based practices.

What can we help with?

  • urinary incontinence (involuntary leakage of urine)
  • overactive bladder (frequent need to urinate and often with a strong urge)
  • pelvic organ prolapse (organs of the pelvis descending)
  • sexual issues, like pain with sex (dyspareunia), vaginismus, vulvodynia
  • lower back, hip or pelvic pain
  • pain with sitting or coccyx pain syndrome
  • preparing for birth
  • healing from a cesarian section
  • abdominal separation postnatally known as diastasis recti , which is a widening of the gap between the “6-pack” muscles of the abdomen
  • returning to sports after giving birth
  • oedema following surgery e.g. breast surgery

How can a physiotherapist, help you regenerate, strengthen and reach your goals?

I can assist you by teaching ideal movement patterns, increasing the awareness, control, strength and tone of the pelvic floor (muscles on the bottom of the pelvis, supporting your organs and preventing leakage of urine and stool), correcting postural issues, loosening tightened structures and strengthening and stabilizing muscles that are weak.

Treatment may include the following:

  • Personalised pelvic floor muscle training
  • Biofeedback (EMG)
  • Myofascial release techniques
  • Breathing pattern improvement and corrective exercises for posture
  • scar tissue mobilisation
  • Ergonomic and lifestyle recommendations
  • Education on pain and pain free desensitisation therapy
  • Electrotherapy
  • Neuromuscular retraining through exercise
  • Kinesio tape
  • Manual therapy techniques
  • Manual lymphatic drainage
